About Us

Our Beginning…

pioneers1The Ursulines of Mary Immaculate is an Inter National Congregation founded on 17th Feb. 1649, in Piacenza, (Italy) by Blessed Mother Brigida Morello of Jesus, a mystic saint of the 17th century.   Moved by the Redeeming Love of the Crucified Saviour and longing to identify herself with the suffering Christ, she spent herself to bring comfort to the suffering and needy of her time specially by educating the young girls in the spirit of Catholic religion.  She longed to be a missionary in the Far East to instill God’s love in the ignorant and tender hearted children.

Indian Mission…

Her missionary dream was realized almost three centuries later through a heroic daughter of hers, namely Mother Felice Radini Tedeschi, who dared to launch out to the unknown shores of the East, sending five young and enthusiastic Italian Ursuline missionaries to the far off India.  Thus the Indian Mission was born on 12th November 1934 as these sisters landed in the shores of Calicut in the Diocese of Calicut.

Pioneers

Growth…

More volunteers followed and these gave themselves wholeheartedly to the service of the church, to begin within the Chirakkal Mission in Kannur, sharing the life of the poor, the ignorant and the sick and suffering.  In 1938 Mother Agatha Francesca Bompard and Mother Adelaide Guilaini from Italy joined the pioneers in Cannanore.  In the years that followed, i.e. in 1939, 40 and 41 the first three Indian missionaries namely Sr. Felix, Sr. Josephine Gonsalves and Sr. Aloysia Vaz joined the small group of Ursulines.

As the harvest grew and the need for more members became urgent, another band of daring and zealous Italian missionaries, Mother Stefania Murelli, Luciana Perotti, Giovanna Alberoni and Tomasina Pecci arrived in India in 1948 adding to the joy of the pioneers.

Since then, hundreds of young girls have followed the example of the Foundress having responded to the Call of the Lord, and live their lives joyfully in the Ursuline Congregation, engaged in various apostolic activities such as educating the young, nursing the sick, ministering to the old and dying, caring for the orphans and homeless, guiding the youth, extending pastoral assistance, family apostolate and uplifting the socially down trodden.
